Quartzite is a hard, unfoliated metamorphic stone that was originally pure quartz sandstone. Sandstone is transformed into quartz by heating and pressure, usually related to tectonic compression in orogenic belts. Pure quartzite is usually white to gray in color. Quartzites often appear in different shades of pink and red due to varying amounts of hematite. Other colors, such as yellow, green, blue and orange, are due to other minerals.
The term quartzite is also sometimes used for very hard, which are composed of completely cemented quartz grains with additional quartz.
